Highlights of Buenos Aires & NW Argentina
This 8-day, 8-night trip is designed specifically for lovers of food, music, art, and the outdoors. The first half of the trip will focus on the amazing food and art scene of Buenos Aires. We will explore the breathtaking geography and rich indigenous history of Northwest Argentina on the second half of our adventure.
Detailed Itinerary
DAY 1:
The group meets at the airport in Buenos Aires and heads to our hotel for a welcome meeting. Buenos Aires is a gorgeous walking city, and our path takes us to cultural icons like Plaza San Martín, Calle Florida, and the Avenida de Mayo. We will take the oldest subway in South America to one of the historic cafés to perk up with a coffee and alfajores, one of Argentina’s most delectable sweets, on the terrace. After a little down time to freshen up and relax, we will head out to enjoy our first meal together at one of the best steakhouses in Buenos Aires.
DAY 2:
Waking up refreshed, we start our day like the porteños (Buenos Aires natives) at a traditional café to enjoy coffee and croissants or pastries. After breakfast we head to Calle Lanín to check out some of the most original street art in the Barracas neighborhood. We will enjoy the murals and mosaics designed by local resident Marino Santa María, which now cover 35 houses in this two-block radius. Taking a break for lunch at one of the local haunts, we will enjoy a home-cooked meal together before moving on to the famous Caminito in La Boca neighborhood. Enjoying tango dancing in the streets, we’ll stroll through the colorful neighborhood originally inhabited by Italian and Spanish immigrants who worked in the port area. We end the walking tour in the late afternoon by taking in the Plaza de Mayo and Casa Rosada, which house Argentina’s government offices. This evening we will have a meal together in a traditional Italian restaurant boasting over 50 homemade sauces and 25 types of pasta.
DAY 3:
Get ready for another full day of art, history, and culture on our third day in Buenos Aires. We start in the famed Recoleta Cemetery, exploring the the final resting place of some of Argentina’s most famous politicians, artists, musicians, and movie stars, including Eva Perón. After exploring the cemetery, we’ll have the option to either visit the astounding collection at the Museum of Fine Arts or take a tour of the painstakingly restored national theater, Teatro Colón. We’ll end the afternoon with a private tour of some of Buenos Aires’ most famous graffiti artists on a street art tour. In the evening we’ll enjoy drinks in Palermo SOHO before having dinner together at another mouthwatering steakhouse.
DAY 4:
After breakfast we head to the airport to fly to Argentina’s stunning Northwest region. Upon arrival, we’ll have lunch together and then drive through the otherworldly Quebrada de los Sosa ravine to Tafi del Valle. A wonderful winding road in the midst of lush vegetation leads us to Tafi, a quaint little village at the foot of the Aconquija Mountain Range. Next we’ll head to Estancia Las Carreras, an estate that specializes in cheese,. We’ll get to see a working alpaca and llama ranch surrounded by gorgeous terrain. After touring the estate & it’s adorable animals, we’ll get to taste some of the finest cheese in the region. In the early evening we head to our beautiful hotel in Tucumán to have drinks and dinner together.
DAY 5:
After enjoying breakfast at our hotel, we drive to Quilmes, crossing the Cuesta del Infiernillo, passing through small villages such as Amaicha del Valle. Here we pause to visit the unique art of the Museo de la Pachamama. This fascinating museum focuses on the geography, culture, and heritage of the indigenous tribes who have inhabited the Amaicha Valley for hundreds of years. After lunch together in Amaicha, we’ll head to the Quilmes archaeological site, where the Quilmes indigenous tribe lived. After a private tour with a local guide, we’ll head to Tolombón to relax in our hotel and enjoy dinner.
DAY 6:
After breakfast in the hotel, we’ll drive to a local winery known for the refreshing Torrontés white wine. Here we take a private tour of the charming vineyard with a local wine connoisseur and enjoy an intimate, al fresco meal on-site. Next we’ll drive through the colorful Quebrada de las Conchas, enjoying the view of curious geological formations such as Garganta del Diablo and Anfiteatro. We’ll take an epic hike together in this area, reminiscent of Utah, with our local guides. After building up our appetite, we’ll head to Salta, the city known as La Linda, or the beautiful. After getting freshened up in our hotel we’ll experience one of the most memorable nights of our trip at a peña, a folklore show full of unique music and dance, and traditional food.
DAY 7:
We’ve saved some of the best Argentina has to offer for our last day in this region. We will leave Salta through Abra de Santa Laura and drive into the historical and fantastic Humahuaca canyon until arriving in Purmamarca. After enjoying lunch in Purmamarca, we visit the picturesque village at the foot of Cerro de los Siete Colores, or Hill of Seven Colors, created by the different minerals that have settled in layers. Then, we continue up the canyon to Tilcara, where we’ll relax and enjoy drinks at the hotel pool, followed by our last dinner in this spectacular region.
DAY 8:
After enjoying breakfast in the hotel, we will head to the airport to fly back to Buenos Aires. We’ll explore the San Telmo neighborhood, have a late lunch and shop in the famous antiques market for some great souvenirs. After dropping off our finds at the hotel, we’ll freshen up to get ready for our last night. Our unforgettable trip culminates at one of the most world-renowned tango shows in Buenos Aires, where we will enjoy an intimate dinner while taking in a tango show.
DAY 9:
Wake up and head to the airport for flights back to the U.S.
